What Does Jesus Save Us From?
Jesus Christ is the most important figure in human history. He is God in the flesh (John 1:1, 14; Col. 2:9), risen from the dead, our Lord (Luke 24:34; John 2:19-21), and Savior (Rom. 10:9-10; Acts 5:30-32). Jesus came to die for sinners (Rom. 5:8), delivering us from the righteous wrath of God.
The Law and Our Sin
Are you a sinner? Have you ever lied, stolen, lusted, coveted, or been unjustly angry? If so, you have broken God’s Law (Exodus 20:1-17), falling short of His standard and are under His inevitable judgment (1 John 3:4; Isaiah 59:2; Rom. 6:23). When you die, you will face God’s righteous and holy judgment.
If this teaching is difficult, remember that this is the message of God's Word—Jesus came to die for sinners and to save them from the wrath to come.
Why You Need Jesus
You need Jesus alone. Your works won't save you (Rom. 3:10-12; Isaiah 64:6). You can never be good enough, and you have nothing to offer God except your sinfulness. It is only by God's love and grace through Jesus' sacrifice that you can be saved from His righteous judgment. Jesus saves you from God’s wrath.
The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Your sins have separated you from God (Isaiah 59:2), leading to death (Rom. 6:23) and wrath (Eph. 2:3). The only way to be saved from this wrath is through faith in Christ (Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 5:1). Trust in what Jesus did on the cross for your forgiveness, not in your own works or sincerity. Only Jesus can turn away the righteous judgment of God upon sinners.
The Gospel - Our Deliverance from the Law
The Gospel is the historical event where Jesus died for sinners, was buried, and rose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:1-4). His death was a sacrifice that turns away God’s wrath (1 John 2:2). This is the only way to be saved from God’s judgment.
Jesus is the one who died for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). He is the only way to God the Father (John 14:6) and the sole revealer of God (Matt. 11:27). He has all authority in heaven and earth (Matt. 28:18). It is only through Him that you can be saved from God’s wrath (Eph. 2:3). Jesus can forgive your sins (Luke 5:20; Matt. 9:1-8), remove your guilt, and set you free from the bondage of sin. He bore our sins on the cross (1 Peter 2:24) so that those who trust in Him would be saved.
What Must You Do to Be Saved?
If you are not a Christian and want to be delivered from God’s judgment, come to Jesus, who died for sinners (Matt. 11:28). Believe and trust in Jesus. Receive Him as your Lord and Savior, who is God in the flesh (John 1:1,14), who died and rose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:1-4). Ask Jesus to forgive your sins (John 14:14; Matt. 9:1-8). Turn from your sins (Acts 3:19). Only Jesus can cleanse you and deliver you from the future judgment of a holy and infinite God. Pray to Jesus. Seek Him. Ask Him to save you. Put your trust in Him.
Counting the Cost
Jesus tells us that being His disciple means taking up our cross and following Him (Luke 14:25-28). Being a Christian isn’t just about feeling good, being nice, or reading the Bible—it’s about living for Christ and doing what is right, even when it’s hard. Jesus requires us to turn from our sins, trust in Him, and live for Him. If you’re not willing to do this, “giving Jesus a try” won’t help. Being a disciple of Christ is challenging, but it is always good and worth the effort. Count the cost before turning to Jesus.
Salvation and New Life
To receive salvation and be born again spiritually, you must believe and confess:
Romans 10:9-10, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.”
Mark 1:15, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Acts 16:30-31, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved? They said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.’”
You must believe, trust Christ, and receive Him (John 1:12). Pray to Jesus, confess your sins, trust in Him, and be saved.
A Note on False Teachings
The Jesus of Mormonism, the Jesus of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Jesus of the New Age, and other such versions cannot save you. Faith is only as good as the One you put it in. Only the Jesus of the Bible—God in flesh, the Creator, the second Person of the Trinity—can save you from your sins.
Next Steps
Find a good church, but avoid cults. Surround yourself with fellow believers who will support your new journey in Christ.
